Bulgaria tightens citizenship criteria

				27.02.2024
The Bulgarian Parliament has voted to amend the Law on Citizenship, making knowledge of the Bulgarian language mandatory.

According to the new legislation, persons applying for Bulgarian citizenship on the basis of Bulgarian origin or through a parent who has obtained citizenship will have to demonstrate fluency in the Bulgarian language.
In addition, the amendment introduces provisions on the deprivation of citizenship in cases of deliberate damage to the prestige or national interests of Bulgaria through incitement to hatred or actions against the State or its citizens. The Citizenship Council will be responsible for reviewing cases of potential deprivation of citizenship.
