Dual citizenship in Lithuania

				13.05.2024
On May 12, 2024, the first round of elections of the President of the Republic of Lithuania took place, during which a referendum was held on the preservation of Lithuanian citizenship. However, a new attempt to change the Constitution by expanding the possibilities of granting dual citizenship in Lithuania was again unsuccessful.

The amendment of article 12 of the Constitution required the approval of at least half of all voters. Currently, dual citizenship is prohibited in Lithuania, and only with a change in the Constitution can this procedure be changed. And due to various circumstances, Lithuanians are forced to choose whether to renounce Lithuanian citizenship and take citizenship of another country.

The issue raised at the referendum suggests the possibility of retaining Lithuanian citizenship in the event of acquiring citizenship of a country friendly to Lithuania. Such countries are considered to be countries belonging to the EU, NATO, countries of the European Economic Area or countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
