Do you want to become a Swedish citizen?

				13.09.2023
It will become more difficult to obtain Swedish citizenship. The Government has decided on directives for new stricter requirements, according to which the investigator must check, in particular, knowledge of the language and self-sufficiency.

"Swedish citizenship marks belonging to Swedish society and has a very high value, both from a legal and symbolic point of view," said Migration Minister Maria Malmer Stenergaard, explaining the reasons for the government's decision.

Among other things, the officials proposed to require additional knowledge of Swedish culture, in-depth language proficiency, proof of self-sufficiency and lack of criminal record.
"The investigator will have to look at exactly where the border of "honest life" passes, but it is clear that we are not talking about one fine for speeding," the minister said. "We also think it's reasonable that you speak Swedish well and can provide for yourself."

In addition, the government has proposed to increase the period of permanent residence in the country for applying for citizenship from the current 4-5 years to 8 years.
