Members of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom Parliament have obliged the British Overseas Territories to disclose the names of offshore account holders.
The amendment, which was adopted without a vote, provides that by the end of 2020, British overseas territories will be forced to publish the names of all the true owners of companies registered in their jurisdictions. Previously, authorities in 14 territories under UK sovereignty, including financial centers in the British Virgin Islands and the Cayman Islands, were able to successfully oppose attempts to create centralized registries with information about the beneficial owners of companies.
In March the Government of the British Virgin Islands in March addressed MPs in the United Kingdom with a warning that the bill would effectively strip overseas territory of “voting rights” and harm “historically strong ties” with the UK.
