New rules for Russian international passports

				28.08.2014

Russia is now following the international standards of the name and surname transcription in international passports of its citizens. With regards to this the transliteration of names has changed. Russian citizens who will be changing their international passports shall keep in mind the new transcription of the names in order to avoid difficulties with the previously purchased flight tickets or other documents.

According to the new rules:
- letter "ц" is now translated as "ts" (earlier - "tc");

- for letter "я", "ю", "е", for which earlier was used "y" with respective second letter (e.g., "я" = "ya", "ю" = "yu"), now will be used"i";

- letter "й" is now translated as "i" (earlier - "y");

- letter "ъ" was introduced as "ie".

There are several examples of the names in new transcriptions: Екатерина - EKATERINA, Анастасия - ANASTASIIA, Дмитрий - DMITRII, Александр - ALEKSANDR, Валерий - VALERII, Наталья - NATALIA.

Changed names can appear in the new passport. If you do not agree with the new transcription of your name, you shall write a special application to FMS on the account of saving the old version of your name.

Expert’s opinion

Urgent! To all whom it may concern! Срочно!!! To the owners of foreign companies, shares, banks accounts, houses, publishing houses, ships!

There is a serious risk to lose everything that was saved after the issuance of new international passport.

Urgently check all registered documents in your name and how they reflect the name stated in the passport you will be changing!
