Hungary restricts the purchase of real estate for foreigners

30.06.2025 A recently passed Hungarian law may allow local municipalities to limit the number of people who can buy real estate and move to their cities.

The Law on Local Identity" (Önazonossági törvény) gives the right to protect one's identity, infrastructure and lifestyle by limiting population growth. This step is currently being considered by several cities, including Alsworth on the northern shore of Lake Balaton.

Municipalities can now regulate the size of the population, control construction and grant preferential right to purchase real estate to local residents.
