Vietnam may allow dual citizenship

				15.04.2025
						Vietnam can allow dual citizenship and make it easier to obtain it.
According to the draft amendments from the country's Ministry of Justice , special cases will be provided in which citizens will be able to simultaneously hold Vietnamese and foreign passports. The specific conditions will be determined by the government of the country.
Currently, Vietnam recognizes only one nationality, requiring applicants to renounce their previous citizenship, with the exception of certain categories of persons.

In addition, the new rules may exempt certain categories of foreigners from standard requirements, such as proficiency in the Vietnamese language, mandatory residence in the country and proof of financial stability.

Under the simplified procedure, the following persons will be able to obtain citizenship:

- persons whose parents or grandparents were citizens of Vietnam;
- foreigners who have made a significant contribution to the development or security of the country;
- minors who have at least 1 Vietnamese parent (the requirement of "full civil legal capacity" is lifted).

The amendments will also simplify the restoration of citizenship for former Vietnamese. The new law will also allow the return of passports to those who renounced Vietnamese citizenship but did not receive another one.
