will Hungary suspend the granting of citizenship?

				07.04.2025
						Hungary is considering the possibility of suspending citizenship to protect public and national security.

If the amendments to the law are adopted, Parliament will allow the State to suspend Hungarian citizenship for up to 10 years to persons who also have citizenship of a State outside the European Economic Area and whose Hungarian citizenship poses a threat to public order, public safety or national security of Hungary.
What can be considered a threat:

- any person serving in the armed forces of another country or being a civil servant of a foreign State;
- any person who, in a manner incompatible with Hungarian citizenship, acts in the interests of a foreign Power or a foreign organization or promotes the goals of a foreign power or a foreign organization;
- any person who has left the territory of Hungary in order to join a terrorist organization or group;
- or a person convicted by a final verdict, for example, for a crime against humanity, violent change of the constitutional order, high treason or financing of terrorism.
