World Trade Organization (WTO) welcomes the entry of Seychelles to the membership

17.07.2012 On 10th of July states-members of WTO considered situation of the Seychelles in the bilateral negotiations on market access, and also investigated the changes in legislation and trade regime. As a result the Seychelles has been praised for the pace of development in the law and the country's trade regime in order to achieve membership in the WTO.

According to the chief representative of the WTO in the Seychelles, Charles Morin, despite limited human and financial resources, the Seychelles has made significant progress in meeting the requirements of accession to the WTO.

Representatives of the European Union, Lesotho (on behalf of the African Group), Oman, Brazil, Mauritius (on behalf of the African, Caribbean and Pacific), India, Australia, South Africa, USA, China, Canada and Barbados expressed its appreciation for the substantial work which fulfilled the Seychelles to join the WTO.

Seychelles, which began their accession to the WTO in 1995, is nearing completion of the process, and has already signed three bilateral agreements on market access with Oman, Mauritius and Canada. In addition, the European Union, South Africa, Thailand and the U.S. are also going to negotiate with the Seychelles.

Expert’s opinion

It's amazing how this small island nation seeks to emerge from the shadows and assert themselves. Considering the offshore status, WTO accession will significantly raise the economic and social status of jurisdiction.

Perhaps the unity of all citizens allowed to carry out the changes it possible to obtain such a high rating from other WTO members. There is much to learn and most powerful states in this almost lost "ofshorki."
