It was founded in 1924 as Bank J Vontobel & Co AG. In January 2000, the bank was renamed Bank Vontobel AG.

Vontobel is an independent Swiss bank. The bank's activities are divided into 3 types:
• Private sector
• Investing
• Status Management
• The ability to open accounts in foreign currency (in euros, US dollars, Swiss francs and other currencies).
• The Bank offers a wide range of financial services, including electronic banking (via online banking, ATMs and EFTPOS).
• Westpac is ranked 5th in terms of capitalization on the Australian Securities Exchange.
