Cyprus cancels the "golden passports"

The Council of Ministers of Cyprus decided to cancel the passports of four Russians who fell under EU sanctions.

The names of these Russians are not disclosed, but it is assumed that they were issued "golden passports" under a scheme that provided for obtaining citizenship of the country for investments of at least € 2 million.

This program was discontinued in November 2020 after a scandal caused by the investigation of the Al Jazeera TV channel. In particular, it showed that the citizenship of the republic, if there is money, could be obtained even by a convict.

According the newspaper Politis, the total number of passports that will be revoked is 21, including dependents of sanctioned Russians.
