EU cancels passports of Russians

The European Commission (EC) recommended that member countries of the European Union (EU) consider the possibility of revoking the European citizenship of the Russians and Belarusians included in the sanctions list.

“...the Commission recommends that member states assess whether citizenship granted under the 'golden passport' scheme to citizens of Russia or Belarus on the EU sanctions list should be revoked,” the EC said in a statement released on March 28.

In official release, the EC notes that some sanctioned citizens of Russia and Belarus may have EU citizenship or “privileged access” to the territory of the European Union.
The European Commission also recommended EU member states to cancel existing schemes for obtaining “golden passports”.
